What is structured wiring?
Structured wiring is a method of installing video, data, and telephone cables. Cables are run from rooms or areas in the house to a centralized location. There the cables meet with outside services, such as cable, satellite, telcom, broadband etc.
Wired vs. Wireless
Structured wiring using Cat 6 data cable can obtain gigabit speeds, which is typically 10 to 50 times faster than a wireless network. Also, wired connections are not affected by distance or interference.
Wireless is rapidly gaining in popularity for both home and business networking even though there are disadvantages such as security issues and interference due to microwaves, other wireless devices, or obstructions like walls.
The technology continues to improve, but as more demands are placed upon the network, it becomes increasingly obvious the network equipment needs to be more robust. Enterprise grade networking equipment allows us to seperate the audio video equipment, personal and guest networks for increased performance and security.
Many times it is not the question of Wired vs. Wireless, but how to combine the technologies to get the best of both worlds.
